Maybe This Will Make Donnie Shut the Fuck Up (AKA: Another New Poll)

October 31, 2006 6:13 PM

andalf by a landslide. Moving right along.

At Donnie's request, I am now asking you to help decide, once and for all, which is the best Journey video. Your choices are as follows:

Open Arms (Live)

Faithfully

Chain Reaction

Why Can't This Night Go on Forever

Separate Ways

and Don't Stop Believin'

Personally, I don't think anything can top Separate Ways. The keyboard on the wall and the drum kit made out of trash cans, in addition to the ridiculous premise (some woman walking around for no apparent reason) puts that video over the top. But, as always, you should make your opinion known!

my soul feels tarnished for having watched all those videos all at once like that. i assume you mean "best" in the ironic sense. this is a very difficult decision.

i love that the "don't stop believing" video has group shots in front of the dumpster, a napoleon-dynamiteesque hand flourish, and the most earnest jack-off gesture of all time. and appears to have mainly been filmed in a dorm room.

but dear god, in "chain reaction" they are acting out the song lyrics with a mannequin--the symbolism of which is never ever revealed. one guy even gets ready to make out with it TWICE. there is a pantomimed fight, they all look totally uncomfortable in their tuxedos (again, why?) and we get a guitar between the legs close up.

you may have just provided the Eternal Question.

Don't Stop Believin' all the way. I heard once that they found the lead singer homeless on the streets of San Francisco. I wonder if it was in one of those Turkish-style bathhouses you always hear about. Whatever the case, his outfit here really captures that (the scarf is awesome), along with the rhythm guitarist's wonderful hot pants.
It's pure eighties cheese with all the production values of those recording booths they used to have in the mall. The "milkin' the cow" hand gesture they make at the end while walking toward the camera in a big gay flying-V formation takes the cake. Vote for this one, folks

Separate ways, all the way. As soon as I found the video last week, I had to link to it.

When I first saw this video sometime in the late 80s/early 90s, I knew it was the worst/best thing to happen to bad music ever.

I have to admit that Separate Ways is pretty bad/good. As Ismael says, the keyboard on the wall, pointless posturing, and all the stuff that made 80's music so pompous and memorable are present. Reminds me of a song called You'll Dance to Anything by the Dead Milkmen, only they were complaining about Book of Love, Souxsie and the Banshees, and other European acts of the era.

so, running of the risk of sounding crazy...is that even journey in the video for don't stop believing? every single person looks different. and the production values are so terrible.

Congratulations, Dee! You're the first person to correctly point out that the "Don't Stop Believin'" video is a hoax. Your prize is . . . well, there's no prize. But, still, good job.

Dee said:

this moment is strangely unsatisfying. because of the lack of a prize.

Well, don't I feel like a jackass for leading the charge against this video; guess it goes to show just how much I know/care about Journey, though.
Still, I feel dirty. Just dirty.

I've gotta go with either Separate Ways (that four person synchronized head turn was pretty fucking bad) or with Chain Reaction. And since I couldn't stop watching the badness of Separate Ways, but was able to turn off Chain Reaction after about a minute, I guess the former wins (or loses?). God, what horrible videos. The rest are ok, since they're just sort of backstage and live footage from shows...but those two are horrid.
