"The Wii-gle Has Landed!"
November 26, 2006 11:54 PM
irst of all, the horrible pun that is this post's title is not mine. It's David's. Just so you know.
Anyway, yes, I now have the Wii, thanks to David's heroic all-night Best Buy stake out. I got it home, set it up, and started playing right away. It's really, really awesome to be able to affect things on the screen simply by moving your hand. The Wii Sports game that came with the Wii is pretty cool, although it's also pretty simplistic. But it gives you a pretty good grasp on how the cotrols and stuff work. Tennis is my favorite thus far.
Of course, who gives a shit about Wii Sports when Zelda's right there? I put the disc in the system and started up the game. Right away, it was pretty awesome. Then I had to go to school. Total playing time: about twelve minutes.
Tonight, I've been concentrating on getting the Wii online. That was impeded by the fact that my wireless router was being a huge pain in the ass. Still, after forever on tech support (I swear, those fucking people are incompetent), I've got it up and running. Just in time to be too late for me to play because I've got to start doing homework.
Oh well, the thing's here now, and I'm going to try really hard not to let it cut into my studying for finals time. I may have to put it in a lockbox or something.

Screw the lockbox. Get yourself a lightsaber / samurai sword-wielding game and go nuts.
I would recommend freezing yourself until after finals/law school. Then, you will have unlimited time to play the wii and the games will be cheaper.
Nice use of "lockbox." This reminds me of my brief venture into warcraft ii, my first semester undergrad grades reflect the incredible time drain presented by that game. Of course, now I'm simply an internet junky (which will likely be reflected in my soon to be earned 73 in Civ Pro II). Althizzle, be gentle.
Sounds cool, Ismael. I'm jonzing for anything game-related at the moment, but all my stuff is about 7000 miles away. The Zelda series has been a disappointment for me since Ocarina of Time, believe it or not, but this new one sounds cool.
You mean you were disappointed by Ocrania of Time? How? That's retarded! That's the best game in the series! In fact, it's been rated amongst the best video games ever.
What is it about Ocarina you didn't like?
Two words: Too cartoon-y (if 'cartoon-y' can indeed be counted as a word).
While the series has never been very realistic, this has never bothered me before. In fact, the only time it really ventured into realism (The Adventure of Link), it was kind of disappointing.
Now, the Gamecube comes out and it's supposed to be the shit on toast, right? Wrong! The controls are froggy and poorly implemented, and the characters in all the games (with the exception of Samus from Metroid) look weaker than they did on A Link to the Past! And there's no way I'm paying $50-$60 for a game that played and looked better in 16-bit graphics to begin with.
So the game, while certainly not lacking in depth or creativity, failed to spark my interest at the time. Perhaps now that the Wii is out, I can revisit Ocarina with an open mind, and at a considerable discount from when it was first issued.
Expat,
I have to agree with you, first off, that the Gamecube was generally disappointing. I never got into Super Mario Sunshine, the Zelda game was disappointing, and Smash Bros. wasn't as great. I have to say, though, that Mario Kart Double Dash was awesome in almost every way--definitely my favorite incarnation.
As far as Zelda, Ocarina of Time is definitely my favorite so far. I mean, the game was so innovative. I understand that it was pretty cartoony and fluffly, but it was a good game nonetheless. I don't know if you played it, but Majora's Mask, while it looked like Ocarina, was a much darker game. It's been called the second darkest Zelda ever, behind Twilight Princess.
I'm barely starting Twilight Princess right now, and I have to say that I'm really enjoying it. It's more of the same gameplay as Ocarina, so if you didn't like that, you might not like this. Still, it's a lot of fun, really engrossing, and the Wii pretty much rocks.
It's confusing at first to have to shake the controler to do something rather than push a button, but you get used to it really quick and, after you do, it's pretty cool. Also, I have to say that the speaker in the Wii-mote is awesome! I thought it was a lame feature when I first heard about it, but it adds a lot to the game in terms of immersion.
Still, I have to say that my favorite game of all time is still Super Mario 64. The freedom in that game is just awesome and, for my money, there's nothing better than flying Mario around in a completely free, 3D environment. Awesome. I'm really looking forward to Super Mario Galaxy. Especially after the wildly disappointing Sunshine.
Woah nelly, how about them appels!
