Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas!
December 23, 2006 3:31 PM
es, it's Christmas Eve eve and The Lovers of Sight and Sound have a treat for everyone. I've recorded a version of my favorite Christmas carol, the Carol of the Bells. Rather than using prepubescent boys to sing, though, I used my guitars. I just took the normal arrangement for the song, played the parts on the guitar, moved a few of the parts around an octave or two, and this is what I got. I don't know how satisfied I am with it, but whatever.
The Lovers of Sight and Sound - Carol of the Bells
Let me know what you think.
And Merry Christmas to everyone!

Merry Christmas Ismail! The song is great. My only beef is that guitars performing this song remind me of the commercial for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I'll just say you kicked their collective behinds by yourself, and you didn't even need a light show... or trannies. Rock on!
Yeah, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra comparison is pretty much inevitable. That's what you get when you cover that song with rock guitars. Still, I tried to make mine as un-wanky as possible. For an example of the exact opposite, although still in the classical vein, see Canon Rock. You'll notice that my Carol of the Bells includes no artificial harmonics or super-fast tapping runs.
In any event, thanks for the kind words. And merry Chirstmas, Mr. M.
Well done! Having never heard the Trans-Siberian Orchestra version, I thought it was a rockin' awesome version. Maybe a little more bass during the ascending runs, but awesome. I played it about ten times...
Hope you had a merry Christmas!!
Lauren
I didn't listen to your song because I heard "Trans-Siberian Orchestra" but I want to know what you would do about this case,mr. smarty lawyer.
Sounds great Ismael! It did conjur up images of the TSO, but only after I read Ryan's comment. So really, any comparison to the TSO is all Ryan's fault.
Well done article that. I'll make sure to use it wsiely.
