My Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Predictions
July 18, 2007 2:04 AM
arry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final Harry Potter book, comes out on July 21st. I take the Illinois bar exam on July 24th and 25th. I need to study pretty much every second between now and the exam. Therefore, I won't be able to read book seven until after the exam. There is only one possible conclusion: the universe hates me.
Still, I'm ridiculously excited about the new book--Half-Blood Prince was pretty much amazing. If waiting for the three Star Wars prequels taught me anything, however, it's to stay the fuck away from spoilers. Apparently, someone has posted what they claim is the entire book online, but I don't want to have anything to do with that. Still, speculation is fun. So, here are some of my predictions about what's going to happen in Deathly Hallows.
Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger all survive.
I don't care how much J.K. Rowling teases this--there's no fucking way she's going to kill Harry. There's just no fucking way--I refuse to entertain the thought for even a second. And I can't imagine either of Harry's best friends biting it, either. Especially since they're finaly going to get together.
Hermione and Ron finally get together.
It's been building since the beginning, so I'm really looking forward to seeing this pay off.
Snape is a good guy.
Again, I don't care how much she doesn't want this to be obvious, but Dumbledore trusted him and that's good enough for me. Snape was acting according to Dumbledore's orders.
Snape's probably going to die.
Maybe even to save Harry. Wouldn't that be awesome? In any event, I just don't see Snape making it out of this alive. Like, what, years later him and Harry would meet up at the Hog's Head and talk about that time they killed the Dark Lord? No way, he's dead.
Percy will stop being an asshole.
Percy was always the most douched-out Weasley, but his behavior lately has been unacceptable. He'll come around and live up to his family's example.
Ginny and Harry stay together, have lots of babies.
They totally end up together. No doubt.
Draco might not be a bad guy.
I think Draco's been trying to live up to his father's example for a long time, but I don't think he's got the stomach to be a real Death Eater. I wouldn't be surprised to see him join the fight against Voldemort once he realizes what the Dark Lord really stands for and what would happen if he actually regained power.
Those are pretty much all my specific predictions, other than that the book's going to kick ass. The other thing I've been thinking about, of course, is who's going to die. I think that Neville's a good candidate for biting it, but I think that Luna's pretty safe. At least I hope so--I love her. I think all the Weasleys are going to be ok, and most of the teachers (except Snape). I wouldn't be surprised to see Remus die, though. Or Mad-eye. Or Tonks. In fact, I bet a lot of members of the Order are going to bite it. I think there's a reasonable possibility that Hagrid will die, although he doesn't really know magic, so I don't know why he'd be in the middle of a big magical duel thing, so maybe he's got a good chance.
I wonder if Grawp will play a role in the last book's events?
God, I wish I didn't have to take the bar.
Anyway, what do you guys think?

your predictions sound right on to me, though i'd add that percy probably goes to that big Head Boyship in the sky shortly (immediately?) after reconciling with his family. i also predict and hope that lupin will kill greyback, because i don't think he'd be introduced in book 6 and revealed as the werewolf who made lupin unless we were going to get a werewolf showdown.
have you watched order of the phoenix yet? i want to know what you thought!
Actually, Dee, I think that Wormtail will kill Greyback in order to fulfill his life debt to Harry. It just seems too coincidental that Peter has a Silver hand, and there are werewolves. Also, I really liked order of the Phoenix. I think they did a good job with it. The only problem was that I really had to piss about half an hour into the movie. That really made it less enjoyable. Also, My ultimate prediction, Harry dies at the hands of Voldemort only after realizing that he could never have defeated him ("Only now, when it is too late, do you realize...-Palpatine). Voldemort marches on the ministry of magic, takes over, and slaughters everyone ever associated with Harry. It is as though Harry never existed. Last line of the book,"...and all memory was removed of the boy with the scar."
Dee,
I have watched Order of the Phoenix. It ended up being my second favorite of the movies thus far, behind Goblet of Fire. I think that they again left out way too much important info and the whole thing felt really rushed. That's my general problem with all of the movies--they try to compress them too much and, in the end, you're left with something that wouldn't make sense to you if you hadn't read the book. I've read the book four times and I still had trouble following along in some parts. I also think it's strange that they left out something that J.K. Rowling has said will be very important: the mirror that Sirius gave Harry.
There were a lot of positives, though, particularly the girl who played Luna. That was awesome. And I loved to hate Umbridge. It's worth checking out, but I'd rather read the book again.
Mr. X.,
It's nice to see that some things never change. Harry's not going to die. And your prediction is clearly incorrect because Ms. Rowling has now said that, although "scar" used to be the last word in the book, that's no longer the case.
Also, while looking around for that page, I found this one, where some of the Mugglenet staffers give their predictions. It's interesting, check it out.
I like everything, but I think its completely possible that Harry dies. But I'm pretty fucking sure Voldemort dies. There's just no way evil gets to win this one. And I'm sure you're right about Snape...I hadn't thought about him dying to save Harry, but I definitely think he's going to be there in the end and is going to play a key part. Any ideas as to who R.A.B. is?
Dee, go see the movie. The fight scene in the Ministry between Voldemort and Dumbledore is awesome and should be seen on the big screen
Lauren,
How the hell did I forget to mention R.A.B.? I think it should be pretty obvious--it's Sirius's brother, Regalus Black. I mean, that's the only person we know of so far that's had those initials (or at least two out of three of them), and it's a little late in the game to introduce a significant new character.
Also, didn't Sirius say that Regalus joined the Dark Lord but didn't really know what he was getting himself into? If that's true, then it makes sense to me that Regalus would have a change of heart and turn against Voldemort.
I really think it's unlikely that Harry will die, but I agree that it's a near certaintude that Voldemort will die.
And that's a really good point about the Ministry of Magic scene--it made the movie. Although I thought it was way too short. And here's something: not only did I see it on an IMAX screen (the biggest in the business), I saw it in 3D. And it was awesome, although Mr. Vice might disagree with me.
I think the problem for me with the 3D scene was it was kind of disconcerting. Everyone was whooshing around, and I had trouble adjusting my eyes to try to pick out what was what. Overall I really liked the movie, though I'd still put it behind Goblet of Fire, which I found generally more enjoyable.
As for the books, I'm not nearly as deep into the lore as most, having only read each one once, and only last summer. But I would make a few general observations --
I agree that Snape will probably die a hero's death. That seems the most fitting end for his character.
I don't think any of the main children will die, for the same reason that Harry won't die -- the series is at least partially a coming-of-age story, with the challenges they face and the strength they have to find within themselves to overcome those challenges. I can't see how an author would put three children through seven years of discovering their powers, learning about themselves and each other, just to kill one of them off. What's the message their? Self-sacrifice, sure, but death is pretty much the ultimate sacrifice, and I don't see that being an appropriate end for the type of young characters she has created.
Also, at no point with the US military join the battle with its arsenal of nuclear weapons, whatever the Mugglenet creator says (I can't remember the magazine name, but he actually said that.) Because that would pretty much be the most retarded thing ever.
I have watched the movie twice, actually. I would put it at number 2, behind prisoner of azkaban. i really really love "new" dumbledore, and i was totally geeking out on the duel at the end.
i'm almost glad the mirror wasn't in the movie, though. i skim over that part in the books--to me, it's maybe the saddest thing that actually happens while harry is at hogwarts. he could have been securely in touch all along and the whole thing at the minisrty wouldn't have happened. and THEN when harry truly believes (for a second) that it'll work afterwards. tears!
Mr. Vice,
That's completely true about the 3D--it can be kind of disorienting at first, and there were definitely moments when you could tell that they did things just to exploit the 3D-ness. Generally, though, I think it's awesome.
I completely agree about the trio being safe because this is a coming of age story. Neither Luke nor Frodo died, so I think these guys are going to be just fine.
Yeah, anyone who thinks she's going to throw the U.S. muggle military into the milieu is severly retarded. That would be almost as lame as having the main character walk into some room and then start his adventure all over again and have the whole series be a huge waste. But no self-respecting author would ever do that. No good, author, anyway.
Dee,
I would also put it at number 2, but I would put Prisoner of Azkaban at 4 or 5--it might not be worse than Chamber of Secrets. POA was the most egregious example of them cutting out really important things. Who created the Maurader's Map? You'd have no idea if you just watched the movie! It's ridiculous.
i know, i know. i left kind of mad myself. but what was there was flippin amazing. i always picture the grounds the way they looked in that movie; we got new, kinda crazy dumbledore; the dementors were so scary; and we got to meet my favorite character. and expository details aside, the climax was outstanding.
anyway, this thread is about something totally different. sorry!
I like the POA film the best myself. I always felt that the world of the films and the world of the books are two different things, and as a result, it doesn't really matter what they cut out, as long as the movie is good. If they kept too much in, it would be like one of those stuffy PBS/BBC mini-series. They would feel long and boring.
Also, a new Harry Potter prediction. I stand by my last statement, but I feel like I have to fill in the details more. Obviously the Ron and Hermione die. First Ron, while the other Hermione watches, (this is why Harry hastily confronts Voldemort before he is ready.) She the brings the bloody remains back to the order of the Phoenix. I feel that JKR is being influenced by thos Snuff/Horror movies coming out lately, and thus, Voldemort will have moved past using the three unforgivable curses. I envision him slowly peeling the skin off of Ron. Hermione will lose it and Ophelia herself, and Harry will stupidly confront Voldemort. Now, because they have the same blood in them, Voldemort will preform a magic ritual beyond even Dumbledore's knowledge (though he will expain the look of triumph, now squandered by Harry's foolish sense of justice). This ritual will be the most gruesome torture scene you can imagine, and Harry will be alive for all of it, feeding Voldemort's power with his pain. Only after the Dark Lord takes over (and Severus Snape is made prime minister under the new "Dark King") will he finally kill Harry. The end.
How do you live with yourself, man?
Ok, seriosuly. I had a whole post composed in my head on the train -- all about my predictions, most of which mirror yours, and I was going to put them up on my blog. Bercause I can't read it this weekend either.
Between this and musical taste, I don't know -- seems like a plot for a bad twilight zone episode
