Random Meme Thing

July 13, 2007 1:12 AM

've been trolling around the blogrolls trying to find cool new blogs. As it turns out, I'm even more trapped in the blawgosphere than I thought I was (get it--bLAWgosphere? Blogs about law? blawgs? God, lawyers are nerds). Still, I've added a few links, so check them out. Or not. Whatever. Also, if you know any cool or interesting blogs, let me know, whether they're law-related or not. And let me know if you'd like me to link to you.

Anyway, I found this meme over at Butterflyfish which, as near as I can tell, is written by a 2L who also happens to be married and a mother of a two-year-old baby. That sounds like fun. Or like the worst thing that's ever happened. And the hardest. In any event, I liked the meme. And it's short, so I actually have time to do it. Yay.

What were you doing 10 years ago?

Ten years ago, I was fifteen, so I was doing nothing. I imagine that I was starting to get excited about the possibility of being able to drive and finally getting the 1965 Ford Mustang my mom owned and which she had promised would be mine on my sixteenth. Man, that car was awesome. I think I was also relatively into this stupid girl named Monica who, unsurprisingly, was totally not into me. I think she was fucking some guy named "Boo." I'm not really sure. Man, high school was stupid.

What were you doing 1 year ago?
I was working at a small law firm in downtown Madison and loving it. I was also looking forward to my third year of law school and my tenure as Senior Managing Editor. It was an awesome, awesome summer.

Five snacks you enjoy:
1. Those Ritz chips things. They're fucking awesome.
2. The Jay's brand jalapeno potato chips. Also fucking awesome.
3. Anything involving milk chocolate but not involving nuts or coconut. Symphony bars are the best. Milk chocolate is way, way better than dark chocolate.
4. Frosted stawberry Poptarts.
5. A Qdoba burrito.

Five songs that you know all the lyrics to:
1. "Hook" by Blues Traveler.
2. "Don't Drink the Water" by Dave Matthews Band.
3. "Monkey Gone to Heaven" by The Pixies.
4. "The Boxer" by Simon and Garfunkel.
5. "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by the Proclaimers.

Ten years ago I was between my junior and senior years of high school. I spent the first month of the summer trying out, but failing to make, the 18-and-under U.S. national rowing team. I ended up making the second team, which instead of going to Spain to race in the world championships, went to Victoria, British Columbia to race the Canadian and Mexican national teams. We finished second, behind Canada. I spent the rest of the summer working out with my old club rowing team in Buffalo, and playing as much basketball as I could fit into my schedule. I'd wake up, go to rowing practice, then to basketball practice, have lunch at home, go to a second basketball practice, maybe lift weights, take a couple of hours off, then play in a different summer league game every night of the week. Man, I miss high school. The summers of '96 and '97 were the best times of my life.

One year ago I was working for the New York State Attorney General. It was a good job, but there aren't many good stories to come out of it, though it was fun to spend a summer in New York.

Five snacks: wheat toast with peanut butter, low-fat wheat thins, mixed dried fruit, Chips Ahoy chocolate chunk cookies, and Nature Valley granola bars.

Five songs I know all the lyrics to:
1) The River, by Bruce Springsteen
2) With or Without You, by U2
3) True Faith, by New Order
4) In My Life, by the Beatles
5) Late in the Evening, Paul Simon

I could name more than one song by U2, Bruce, and the Beatles, but that wouldn't have been as much fun. Those are the three-most played groups in my cd collection. Dylan would probably be fourth.

Ten years ago I was 14, would have been the summer before I started high school. I honestly cannot think of what I was doing. I didn't have a car yet, and we lived out in the country, so I didn't get to hang out with friends much. I don't think I was playing baseball anymore, and I hadn't started playing soccer yet. I hadn't started making SNL videos yet either. No noteworthy vacations come to mind. Perhaps I just ceased to exist that summer.

Last year at this time I was working at the DA's office in Oshkosh, preparing for my first jury trial. I would have been counting the minutes until I could get in my car, fly down to Madison, and see my girl and my friends again.

Five Snacks I Enjoy -
1. Skittles
2. Popcorn
3. Twizzlers
4. Mint Creme Double Stuffed Oreos
5. Lays Kettle Cooked Barbeque chips

Five Songs I Know the Words To:

- You'll have to forgive me, I don't know many. Most that I do know are hip hop. With that in mind:
1. California Love - 2Pac and Dr. Dre
2. Gold Digger - Kanye West
3. Mama Said Knock You Out - LL Cool J
4. Ice, Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice
5. Big Pimpin - Jay-Z

Terry,
You're one of the few people I know who would describe high school as the best time of their lives. Also, surprising that you beat the Mexican team. I have to say, I'm going to hold that against you.

Mr. Vice,
Pre-high school summers are rarely memorable. Or, at least, I can't remember mine. And you can't remember yours. So it seems appropriate to generalize.

I would have been greatly disappointed if you hadn't listed five hip hop songs, although I was surprised by your inclusion of LL Cool J. What the fuck ever happened to him, anyway?
