Wanna Know What I Think?

July 11, 2007 1:43 AM

have exactly nothing to say right now. I've scoured the internet looking for something interesting to talk about, but there's nothing. I've noticed that my posts have been relatively introspective or narrow lately. This is probably due to the fact that I'm so busy right now that I don't really have time to take note of interesting things to talk about on here.

So let's try this. Is there anything you guys would like to have me rant about? I promise to throw in a bunch of "fuck"s. Let me know.

Dee, I know you wanted my opinion on the whole Auto-admit thing, but the fact of the matter is that I don't really have an opinion. I've been to that site, and I can tell you that every person who posted on there was a douchebag of galactic proportions. I can only assume that the purveyors were even bigger douchebags. So, I sort of think that they deserve everything they get, just on general principle. As I contended in my post about Don Imus, however, having a right to do something doesn't mean you should. So, in this case, having (or thinking you have) the right to say nasty things about female law students doesn't mean you should, and I would have expected future lawyers to know better. On the other hand, I don't know that I would have sued had I been the target of those comments. Like I said, I don't know a lot about it, so I could be completely off base. One thing I do know, though, is that the whole thing makes the legal profession look bad--as if it needed any help in that department. That pisses me off because a large proportion of the lawyers I've interacted with take their jobs, their profession, their reputation, their duties, very seriously and are extremely conscientious about not making the legal profession look, well, evil. Maybe I've been lucky, but that's just my experience.

Also, I'm aware that Zeitgeist, The Smashing Pumpkins' first album in seven years, came out today. I bought it but, due to circumstances outside of my control, have not listened to it all the way through yet. I wasn't too impressed by what I've heard, though. I'll post a full review as soon as I've had time to process it.

Which version did you get? Did you actually have to go to a Target to get the title track? By the way, you should make sure to steal the songs that were special Mega-store only bonus tracks. A really cool record store is going out of business here and I place the blame on Billy. There is blood on your hands Mr. Corgan! May God have mercy on your soul! (On a side note, I heard the album wasn't bad. Not great, but not bad.)

Heh, the new SP album isn't even good enough for you to recall the correct name, eh? Honest mistake :)

Mr. X.,
I didn't get it at Target. I actually bought it at a small independent music store. I think that the whole "multiple versions" thing is lame, just like comic books with alternate covers, only CDs cost more than comics. Rest assured that I will be getting all the songs through alternative (read: less than reputable) means. Also, I bought the fancy version with the extra packaging. And I feel ripped off.

I also, however, don't give a shit about small CD stores going out of business. I feel bad for the people, but I don't understand why people should feel compelled to pay a higher price for CDs at independent places than at places like Target (Wal-Mart's different because they're fascists). If the small places can't compete, that's the market, not necessarily a tragedy.

Santi,
I totally fucked that up. I've changed it, but I still feel ashamed. Or maybe my ambivolence towards this thing affected my writing.

afs,
That's really interesting. I'll let you know what I think.

This is an old comment, but the main reason to support the local shops is because they usually sell used records, which is always nice, and they tend to carry a much larger variety. Fact is, Target has what, two rows of CD's, most of which are the stuff that sells the most, and absolutely no imports or anything else. The independent stores tend to limit the homogeneity. Plus, I just like that felling of going into a record store and finding random stuff. I do admit to buying CD's a big stores though, so I'm not pretending that I am sort of fanatic clas warrior. Boo Yah!

The used records thing is a good point--you can't walk into Target and get an original--not reissue--Frank Zappa album. But I disagree about the imports and rarities. Target certainly doesn't have them, and the independent stores might (I loved that one we went to that time in Ann Arbor), but something like a Virgin Megastore will almost certainly have (or be able to obtain) almost anything you want.

Let's be honest, dude. The reason you love the indie stores is that you feel like, every time you buy something from the indie places, you're supporting Rob and Championship Vinyl. That's it, isn't it, dude?
