Why the Fuck Is Amy Winehouse Famous?

December 6, 2007 8:03 PM

eriously? How the hell does someone like her end up not only famous but nominated for six Grammys, including four nominations in the top categories? That's fucking fucked up. Granted, I've never actually heard one of her songs, but just look at her:

She actually looks frightening. And what is with that fucking beehive hairdo? What the hell is going on here?

I guess I lied earlier when I said that I hadn't heard any of her songs. I have heard this:

But, seeing as how she's just mumbling in a vaguely rhythmic fashion, I don't think it counts as hearing a song.

So why, why, why, is this woman rich and famous? I blame the British. This is yet another reason why the British should have been prohibited from exporting music to the United States after, say, 1970.

We should ignore her, and hope she goes away.

I think the US has had more musical trainwrecks than the British, though. Look at how many American Musicians died of overdoses in the late 60's/early 70's, not to mention grunge rock/alternative suicides in the 90's. If anything, Brit Pop is less tragic than the whole scene in the US, the Winehouse Creature and Oasis notwithstanding.

Because Back in Black is the best album released this year, hands down.

I must agree with the above comment. Well, I don't know if I would say (yet) that Back to Black is the best album of the year, but it is definitely pretty awesome, even if Amy Winehouse may be a train wreck. Thanks for Adelina's boss for introducing it to us.

Wow, she looks good for a methed out trainwreck that used to be a dude. Notice how the cross appears to be repelled from her form in that second picture?

By prohibiting the import of British music after 1970, we'd have missed out completely on the Spice Girls, James Blunt, and Bono, if you want to herd all parts of the UK into "Britain."

you're right almost every live performance i've seen of her she's been fucked up but her album is good and i like that she uses real musicians. it feels like youre listening to a real performance versus a super studio remixed album.....she just has a substance abuse problem and whats so new about that?

Wait, this woman's album is one of the best of the year? In a year that featured the release of new albums by the Arcade Fire, Radiohead, The Shins, and a bunch of others, you guys think that Back to Black is one of the best? That's just... incredible!

Like I said in the post, I hadn't really heard any of Ms. Winehouse's music. So, after seeing what you guys had to say, I downloaded "Rehab." This is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. It's not as bad as, for example, "Bananas" or "My Lumps" or whatever, but it's fucking terrible. The music is boring and uninspired--it's just a perfunctory rehash of crappy doo-wop songs. The vocals fall flat--there's nothing impressive here. She's not particularly soulful or anything. She's just sort of rhythmically talking. The song seems fucking interminable--it goes on for-fucking-ever. This is a terrible song. I listened to clips of some of the other songs on the album, and they all seemed just as bad.

I'm seriously shocked that you guys think this is so good.

Once again, your musical acumen does not surprise me. Back to Black is def a decent album, although it is certainly not a best album of the year. However, i would also note that the new shins album sucks.
