"The Broken World"

his is my latest song. I wrote it in about fifteen minutes and the entire recording process took about an hour, including mixing. It's a pretty simple song--two guitars playing identical parts, a double-tracked vocal, and some harmonies. Not complicated at all.

The lyrics are very simple, but I like them. Here's what I sing:

I wish I could fix the world
I wish I could fix the world
For you, for you

And if I could mend your bones
And if I could mend your bones
I would, I would

The sun will shine, the ice will melt
The sun will shine, the ice will melt
One day, one day

I do not know where you will go
I do not know where you will go
I'm staying here, I'll stay right here

One of the problems I had with this one is that the tracks ended up being extremely bass heavy, so there would be this really obnoxious booming low end. I always try to listen to my songs on various sound systems, just so that I can get a sense of what they'll sound like when--and if--other people listen to them. This one sounded good on headphones, decent on my computer's speakers, and terrible in my car--the fucking door panels almost vibrated off. So then I fucked around with EQ and compression for a little bit and managed to get it more under control, although it's still not perfect.

Still, this is one of my most professional-sounding songs so far, I think. It's also my most "Indie"-sounding song, which is strange because I didn't set out to emulate that style at all.

As always, let me know what you think, positive and negative.

I like it. Its quiet and introspective and sort of hypnotic. Perfect backup vocals.

Very cool and simple. I hear Tool and Zep influences, and as for the back vocals, definitely your best so far.

This is your best one yet. The mix does come in bass heavy at times, but it's not too bad. And I agree with the Expat on the Tool influence. I must be rubbing off on you!

I didn't consciously draw any influences from Tool. Where are you hearing that?

When I hear your song, I'm reminded of both The Patient and Schism off of Lateralus. Sure, it's spare of effects and seven minutes or so of thematic development, but I can still hear it.

You know, I listened to it again with an ear out for Tool, and I definitely found it. Although, like I said, that's not so much what I was going for. But I'll still construe the whole thing as a compliment.

I love it! You play so beautifully and I really like the chord progression. The only thing I would do is add some harmony, but I'm a "harmony whore" lol

Yay harmony!
