Are You A Member of Generation Y?

February 6, 2009 1:22 AM

ecently, tRJ told me that his work had sponsored some thing where people came in and told all the employees what they were like based on when they were born. Apparently, Generation X kicks ass and Generation Y is a bunch of ingrates. Or something.

Anyway, I was thinking about that today and I went and started looking on the whole "Generation Y" thing. As it turns out, I was not as cool and unique as I thought I was when I was a teenager. Did you know, for example, that everyone my age was sad when Kurt Cobain died? It's true, apparently.

So after looking around, i decided to do a little quiz. If you're around my age--I'm 27--then maybe you'll get a kick out of remember this stuff. If you're older, then this'll make you feel old and out of touch. If you're younger, then you won't feel anything because you're probably too busy being worthless and trying to fit into skinnier jeans.

So here goes:

  1. On The Adventures of Pete and Pete, what was the name of the younger Pete's tattoo?
  2. In what order did the Planeteers call out their elements when summoning Captain Planet?
  3. What was the name of the planet where the action in Thundercats took place?
  4. What was Doug's dog's name?
  5. Arrange these in order from best to worst: Mr. Wizard, Bill Nye the Science Guy, Beakman. This isn't a subjective thing, either.
  6. What was the group that told each other stories on Are You Afraid of the Dark called?
  7. On You Can't Do That on Television, what substances did people have dumped on them and what words triggered those substances?
  8. What was the name of the ranch on Hey Dude?
  9. Finish this lyric: "Camp Anawanna, we hold you in our hearts, and when we think about you _________."
  10. What were Alex Mack's superpowers?

Post your answers and then I'll post the correct answers. There will be a prize for the winner.

It seems you think Nickelodeon was the defining cultural experience for members of Generation Y. Also, Kurt Cobain's death was more of a Generation X thing.

Ha! I was just going to post exactly what Frank said regarding Nickelodeon.

For the record, I have a strong recollection of everything you mentioned, but sadly I can't remember the specifics. For example, I remember exactly what the younger Pete's tattoo looked like, and I can remember exactly what Doug's dog looked like, but I can't recall the names :( I know 7 and 9 for sure, and I'm very ashamed I don't remember 8.

So apparently the generational cut-off line was the year between when we were born. Because I don't know any of these. Except maybe number 2. I think it was "Earth, wind, water, heart" then some chant like "Gooooo planet!" Though I may even be wrong about that.

Mr. X and Santi,
You know, I thought about how much of a Nickelodeon bias this thing had, but I think it's appropriate. I mean, is either one of you denying that Nick played a significant role in your formative years?

Also, as far as Kurt Cobain, I think you're probably right, Frank, but I definitely have a memory of it. And Nirvana definitely had an influence on me and, well, all of us.

Vice,
Really? How much younger than me are you, again? Also, you didn't have cable growing up, so I think that would totally make some of these pointless for you.

Is this gonna post twice? there seeme to be some bugs in the system...anyway.

It seems like a defining characteristic for Gen Y for you was that you had to watch a ton of tv growing up. i don't know any of those answers; alot of the questions i've never even really heard of. also, i think that we missed the gen x thing but were right on the break, so we knew what was up, sorta. i have a distinct memory of my neighbor pumpin 'Nevermind' in his driveway and being really really impressed, but my parents wouldn't get the cd for me and i wasn't really old enough to get it myself. that being said, he prolly could have been pumpin boy george in his driveway and i would have been impressed, i was only like 10 years old. I will say that i did catch the Weezer Blue Album right when it came out in 6th grade and that was when kids i knew and were friends with started to 'party' a little bit, if you know what i mean.
